How serious is your thyroid nodule (lump)?

Thyroid nodules or lump, which is an abnormal growth in your thyroid gland, is a common occurence and fortunately often harmless.

However do not lower your guard as yet, because a small but sizeable percentage of them can be dangerous and needs to be removed. These patients are the ones who need to be seen by us, fortunately or unfortunately.

Before we get into more specifics, please note that a common confusion among patients is that they feel if the thyroid hormones (tested in blood as T3, T4, TSH) are normal then they have no issue with thyroid gland. This particular disease I am talking about, which produces a lump in thyroid, often have normal thyroid hormones in blood test. The lumps can be seen or felt or if they are small, are detected on ultrasonography imaging.

So what do you need to do? Do not panic. More often than not thyroid nodules are harmless. However there is a process we follow to determine which nodules are harmless (hence they can be ignored) and which needs our attention. Usually we will ask for a few very simple tests like ultrasonography and needle cytology etc, and these will often determine the further course of action. Some thyroid nodules will turn up to be malignant (cancer) but by God’s grace most thyroid cancers (differentiated) do extremely well with appropriate treatment.

Our job as thyroid surgeons, is to provide you the best & most effective treatment and your job is to be with us in this journey towards cure.
